Title: Bring Her Back
Director: Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou
Release Date: May 30, 2025
It’s time for the return of the Philippou brothers! Ever since their success from Talk to Me, they struck with another horror comeback with a similar concept from that movie. Today’s movie (and also the final movie we will review this year) is Bring Her Back, the latest directorial comeback from Danny and Michael Philippou that released in May 2025. Against a tight budget of only $15 million, it performed with a moderate box office success of $39.1 million worldwide. Additionally, it gained positive reception from critics and audiences for its emotional depth, strong acting performances, and psychological exploration of trauma. Through well-cooked emotion and disturbing visuals, Bring Her Back is an amazing horror movie that deserves to be brought back by horror and cinema fans.
Summary
"Andy and his sister Piper face unsettling events while living with their foster mother Laura, whose grief and secrets draw them into a chilling supernatural ordeal." - Google
Reasons
The good rituals of Bring Her Back are the gruesome scares, awesome performances, and substantial story. This is a Talk to Me level of scary because they got the same directors. In place of cheap and predictable jumpscares, it relies on psychological terror and disturbing VHS imagery to build dread. To make it more chaotically disturbing, it has amazing gore because the makeup and production used were nasty. Besides gory scares all over, the performances are authentic. The child actors, like Billy Barratt (as Andy) and Sora Wong (as Piper), have genuine chemistry with each other in regard to the rituals. In addition to them, Sally Hawkins (as Laura) balanced both cuddliness and cruelty in a way that makes her appear in anybody’s nightmares. Moving on to the depth, the story is substantial and emotionally gripping. Other than being a movie that tackles occult and loss, it is mainly centered around grief. Sure, the plot takes a lot of time to follow, but the plot of bringing back someone from the dead shows how it can raise the emotional stakes.
Other good rituals from Bring Her Back are the smart direction, excellent cinematography, and visually subtle hints. If you rehire the two brothers who directed an awesome horror movie from the past, you know what you’re going to get in a new movie like this one. Being known for this, it can tackle the deeper lore behind the occult without supporting it, which shows how this movie is unsettling to a degree. Although it is a supernatural film, the rules are never explicitly laid out to make the film more interesting to follow. Finally, the movie can hint at some horror using only the visuals alone. As mentioned before, this is a supernatural movie that does not straight up lay out the rules, but it uses color palettes and normal homes to hint at the discomfort. It also makes normal household items, such as VHS tapes and family photos, feel menacing because they play major points in the grief-driven narrative.
Conclusion
Thanks to the Philippou brothers making a comeback this year, Bring Her Back should deserve more attention from horror fans and cinema lovers. Gore mixed with emotional stakes makes this delicacy. Yes, Weapons is still the best horror movie of the year, but this is also worth checking out! If you love horror, especially if you loved Talk to Me, definitely give this a try. You will not regret seeing the Philippou brothers coming out with intense scares and emotional depth.
