Title: Good Boy
Director: Ben Leonberg
Release Date: October 3, 2025
A new horror film switched things around in its typical formula. Instead of a human survivor, this movie tells the story from the pet's POV. Today's movie is called Good Boy, the indie horror movie starring a dog protagonist. Against a budget of only $700,000, it made its own success of $7 million. Critics praised its originality and emotional depth, but audiences either liked or hated its storytelling depth. For its unique take on the supernatural horror genre, Good Boy is a modern horror movie that lives up to its name.
Summary
"A man moves into a new home that has supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities start to threaten him, his brave dog comes to the rescue." - Google
Reasons
The good tricks that Good Boy learned are the unique concept, heartbreaking story, and phenomenal acting. A few 2020s horror films, like Weapons and Smile, do look for ideas to spread wide creative freedom. As mentioned earlier, this one tells its story from the dog's perspective, and we consider it the freshest take on horror. You can tell how Indy is feeling from his canine expressions like tail wags and high-pitched cries. In addition to originality, the story will grip your heart. The movie is a simple haunted house story with the dog as the main character. Because it's a dog movie, it uses emotion wisely to see if someone is surviving. Despite the dog being the main protagonist, the acting is realistic. Indy, the star of the movie, portrays his emotions without spoken dialogue. Along with the dog, the human cast did awesome as the supporting characters.
Other good skills of Good Boy include the meaningful themes, great scares, and easy pacing. Well, it is a dog movie, so it is about loyalty and emotional support. Its other themes are grief and instinct to explain why this character is doing something. Whether or not you own a pet, it shows how dogs truly care about their owner's well-being. Besides telling a heartbreaking story, it also has dreadful scares. Just to clarify, it is a tame PG-13 horror film, but the demons actually look creepy. The minimal gore makes things safe for anyone 13 and above. Finally, the pacing is fantastic. What stands out is that its simple story fits the 1-hour and 17-minute length. No unnecessary subplots or filler are present, so that means the viewing is hands-down easy.
Conclusion
Good Boy is an impressively good horror movie that is not afraid to show creativity. Weapons is amazing, 28 Years Later is amazing, and this one is amazing. Just because a film is not backed by a major studio, like Paramount or Warner Bros., that does not mean its status makes it straight-up hideous. I mean, this film does have love, but more people should watch it. If you are a genuine suspense fan, take note of this movie for a creepy movie night. It came out on digital recently, so check it out whenever you'd like to do anything.
