Who's celebrating his birthday in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants! Since this show reached its twenty-fifth prime on May 1, 1999, it has set up a lot of collaborations with other companies. From the Wendy's Krabby Patty Kollab to "SpongeBob's Birthday" from Just Dance 2025 Edition, the sponge still holds its crown as the most iconic cartoon of all time. Today, we will look back at The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, the first movie in the SpongeBob movie series! Released back on November 19 of 2024, the movie made a box office success, grossing $141.1 million against a budget of $30 million. It also gained positive reviews which gave rise to the standalone movie sequels years later. Thanks to being completely respectful of the TV series with its humor and story, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie excels its way onto becoming a Goofy Goober!

Summary

After Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) was framed for stealing King Neptune's crown, SpongeBob SquarePants (Tom Kenny) and his pink friend, Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke), go on a 6-day quest to retrieve it. When they go out from Bikini Bottom to Shell City, numerous obstacles come along their way.

Reasons

To start off, the best ingredients of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie are the faithfulness, animation, and story. Unlike many other movie adaptations of TV shows at the time, this movie tends to stay faithful to the show. One good thing is because of Stephen Hillenburg directing it, this movie stands out as a good story that barely connects with any of the seasons. That way, newcomers of the SpongeBob franchise can watch it. Speaking of which, the animation is perfectly done, thanks to having Nickelodeon be hired to do so. You might think that it is animated in the exact same way as the show. However, since it is a movie, the animation went through shading and more movement to make it feel like a movie. Even if SpongeBob is completely traditional, it blended in completely with the live-action segments of the adventure, especially in the David Hasselhoff scene. Last up for this batch, the story, with the hero's journey structure, is perfectly told in the way SpongeBob would do it. In it, there is the quest, Plankton, and SpongeBob's deals with the Krusty Krab. They are blended together to make an hour-long episode finale of the show no matter the season. Compared to all the other SpongeBob movies that came out, this one had the most meaningful message, which told us to be ourselves no matter how old we are. Kid or not, you can make your best differences.
Some of the other best ingredients of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie are the characters, humor, and voice acting. Of course, the returning characters are exactly the same as we know from the show, especially SpongeBob himself who develops his kid self on this high-stakes quest. Same is said for Patrick, SpongeBob's starry best friend, who also gets character development, even though he may be more simple-minded. Even the new characters, like Mindy and King Neptune, are also fun and likable. Moving on, the humor is exactly the same fun way as the show does it. The movie has the same slapstick, one-liners, and gags that play their part in the journey. Kids are not the only ones that get laughs from the humor. Adults get it as well since SpongeBob SquarePants functions as a show for anyone regardless of age. Finally, the voice acting is well done in the same way that the cast does it. All of the returning cast did such a great job, of course. What about the new actors? They voice acted their roles enough for their characters to fit in the show as well.
Although The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is already a perfect TV show-based adaptation, it may still have its flaws that might not appeal well to everyone. Some of the jokes tend to be a tad grosser than the original show. This is especially for newcomers watching it because they may be grossed out by some of the show-inspired innuendo. In addition, some of the returning characters, like Sandy Cheeks and Mrs. Puff, have very little screen time. However, this may be justifiable because they are SpongeBob's side friends after all. After all, Patrick is SpongeBob's best friend, so he is the one tagging along with him.

Conclusion

Thanks to being completely faithful to the original TV show, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a Goofy Goober that is labeled as one of the best ways to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary. Furthermore, the movie even gone through its 20th anniversary so recently! Regardless of which season is airing right now, this movie will serve as the final episode of the series as a whole. There are also two movies coming out for its movie line, Plankton: The Movie and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, and these are for next year. Let's just hope that they are way better than Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. For now, definitely watch this, especially if you love SpongeBob SquarePants with your very whole heart!

    Score: 10/10 (i'm a goofy goober yeah!)
